Free childcare for key workers

Childcare for children under five

The Welsh Government has allocated funding that can be used to support key workers with their childcare costs and support vulnerable children during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Childcare costs for pre-school children (children aged from 0 to 5 years) of key workers, excluding childcare provider retention fees, will be funded.

This is initially for a 3-month period (April-June), at which time it will be reviewed.

Where possible, school age children should continue to attend the provision in schools.

Welsh Government may consider funding childcare places for older children in exceptional circumstances and on a case-by-case basis.

Free school meals

Children eligible for free school meals will benefit from a national voucher scheme allowing them to continue to access meals whilst they stay at home.

Schools can now provide every eligible child with a weekly shopping voucher worth £15 to spend at supermarkets while schools are closed due to coronavirus.
